Recalled Laundry Detergent Packets
The recall pertains to Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods liquid laundry detergent packets sold in the United States. The issue involves the potential splitting of the outer packaging near the zipper track, which could lead to severe harm if the contents are ingested, especially by children or vulnerable individuals. Ingesting a significant amount of these detergent packets can be fatal for people with underlying health conditions.
The recommended actions for consumers are to seek a refund or replacement for the affected products.
The recall was initiated on April 5, 2024, and approximately 8.2 million units in the U.S. are affected. Additionally, around 56,741 units were sold in Canada.
This recall involves certain lot codes of Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods liquid laundry detergent packets packaged in flexible film bags that were manufactured between September 2023 and February 2024. Recalled products range from bags with 12 to 39 laundry detergent packets and include the productes listed in the table below.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled bags are advised to take immediate action by securing the bags in a place that is not accessible to children. They should then contact Procter & Gamble to request a full refund and a replacement child-resistant bag to store the product safely.
Additionally, consumers can also request a cabinet lock to further secure their laundry materials. To determine if their bag is included in the recall, consumers should check the lot code located on the bottom of the package. The list of recalled lot codes can be found on pg.com/bags. Consumers with bags containing recalled lot codes can participate in the recall process by submitting a photo of the product clearly showing the lot code.
Regarding incidents or injuries related to this packaging defect, there have been no confirmed cases directly linked to it. However, Procter & Gamble has received reports of four children in the United States gaining access to the liquid laundry packets, with three cases involving ingestion during the period when the recalled lots were being sold. It is uncertain if these incidents involved laundry packets from the recalled bags.
The recalled bags were sold at various retailers nationwide, including Big Lots, CVS, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, and online platforms like Amazon.com. The products were available for purchase between September 2023 and the present, with prices ranging from $5 for a single 12-count bag to $30 for a box containing four 39-count bags.
The Procter & Gamble Company, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the manufacturer of the recalled bags, which were produced in the United States. The recall number associated with this product is 24-189.
