The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has released a public health alert concerning a product labeled as bao Thai-style curry chicken. This alert was issued due to misbranding and the presence of undeclared allergens.

The product, which is labeled as bao curry chicken, may actually contain teriyaki chicken bao products. These teriyaki chicken bao products contain soy and sesame, both of which are common allergens. It is important to note that these allergens were not listed on the product label.

The FSIS has issued this public health alert to inform consumers, especially those with soy and sesame allergies, that consumption of this product should be avoided. Despite this issue, a recall was not initiated as the affected product is no longer available for purchase.

The fully cooked, frozen bao curry chicken product was packaged on March 20, 2024. The following product is subject to the public health alert:

  • 10-oz. boxes containing four “WOW BAO BAO THAI-STYLE CURRY CHICKEN” with “best if used by” date “4/12/25” printed on the side of the box.

The product bears establishment number “P-40001” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to Walmart retail locations nationwide.

The issue came to light when the manufacturing facility informed the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) that a customer complaint had been received regarding a mislabeling incident. The complaint indicated that a package labeled as bao Thai-style curry chicken actually contained pouches of bao teriyaki chicken. Despite this mix-up, there have been no verified instances of negative reactions resulting from the consumption of these items.

If individuals have any concerns about potential health issues, it is recommended that they seek advice from a medical professional. FSIS is worried that some of these mislabeled products might be present in consumers' home freezers. Therefore, individuals who have bought these items are strongly advised against consuming them. It is suggested that these products be discarded or returned to the store where they were purchased.
